
Mustang is the isolated region of the Kali Gandaki valley known as upper Mustang, Mustang once a independent kingdom named Lo, This small medieval kingdom in the vast desert is ruled by a local king, Only in 1950 it was officially declared part of Nepal, although it’s closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. It lies north of the two peaks between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri of 8,000 meter. Mustang‘s have built their own settlements along rivers and creeks, the villages of whitewashed houses appear like oases in a huge desert, this place is almost tree-less barren landscape. Due to its sensitive location next to the Tibetan border, since 1992 it has been allowed to foreign visitors, tourism to Upper Mustang is regulated.

As you know geographically it’s hard to live your life here but mustang’s people have their own way of family life, Mustang’s have their own culture which is quite surprising to outsiders, People of this region mostly grow potatoes, buckwheat and barley. In the mustang region houses are made of stone and sun baked mud bricks. The city wall and the four storey palace has kept the culture, lifestyle and heritage remain unchanged for centuries.
