Mustang Region Trek

Mustang is the isolated region of the Kali Gandaki valley known as upper Mustang, Mustang once a independent kingdom named Lo, This small medieval kingdom in the vast desert is ruled by a local king, Only in 1950 it was officially declared part of Nepal, although it’s closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. It lies north of the two peaks between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri of 8,000 meter. Mustang‘s have built their own settlements along rivers and creeks, the villages of whitewashed houses appear like oases in a huge desert, this place is almost tree-less barren landscape. Due to its sensitive location next to the Tibetan border, since 1992 it has been allowed to foreign visitors, tourism to Upper Mustang is regulated.

As you know geographically it’s hard to live your life here but mustang’s people have their own way of family life, Mustang’s have their own culture which is quite surprising to outsiders, People of this region mostly grow potatoes, buckwheat and barley. In the mustang region houses are made of stone and sun baked mud bricks. The city wall and the four storey palace has kept the culture, lifestyle and heritage remain unchanged for centuries.

Mustang is a place  where beauty and happiness flourishes, in spite of hardship Mustang has a long, rich and complex history that makes it one of the most interesting parts of Nepal , However mustang is geographically difficult to live but beauty of this place is more difficult to explain in words. The whole area has an isolate and mystic feel to it, enchanting and inspiring visitors to its region.  Buddhist monasteries and nunneries are built into forbidding cliffs and mountain ledges, and the starkly beautiful, windy, arid Tibetan plateau is unbroken for many hours of trekking or riding on, horseback are also other exciting parts of mustang.

Mustang is one of the few place in the world that has long-lived a very close-niche life and that region was, still untouched, inaccessible to outsiders. Trek to upper mustang  is through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks and our services make your holiday trip unforgettable and memorable to your whole life. The best time to do Trekking in Upper Mustang is July to November and March to June. There are many monasteries form the 14th century, Buddhist shrines, Thankas, Mandalas, and deities in and around the cliff. It is believed that there are many caves where Tibetan monks have meditated.

Highlight

Luri Gompa and Yara/Ghara village is lies East South of Lo-Manthang,Luri Gompa (Cave monastery) sits high above the crumbling landscape like an eagle's nest. It is some of the last cave monasteries in Lo and Tibet. No written record exists for the construction of Luri Gompa. Luri Gompa and some other monasteries are affiliated with the Kagyu sect (one of the sect of Buddhism). The style of painting suggests they were done by Nepalese (Newari) artists working for Tibetan patrons. The cave temple dates from the 13th - 14th century. The central chamber of the Gompa is carved out of the rock creating a domed ceiling on which are painted a series of Mahasiddha, Sakyamuni Buddha and Chenrezig figures etc, which are the true masterpieces. Lining the walls are series of 14th century paintings, which depict India Mahasiddahs. Some are real individual and other mythical.
